Cayos Cochinos
AUTHENTIC HONDURAS
The Cayos Cochinos, also known as Cochinos Cays, are a group of small islands located 30 kilometers northeast of La Ceiba on the northern coast of Honduras. The group consists of two larger islands, Cayo Menor and Cayo Grande, as well as 13 smaller coral islands.
The islands are a protected area and are managed by the Honduras Coral Reef Foundation. The coral reef here is part of the world's second-largest coral reef system known as the Meso-American Barrier Reef. There is a research station on Cayo Menor, the smaller of the two main islands.
The Cayos Cochinos are car-free islands with no roads or bikes. There is a hiking trail on Cayo Grande that connects residences and beaches. On the highest point of the island, there is a lighthouse that can be reached by hiking through beautiful jungles. These jungles are also home to the world's only pink boas. The islands are inhabited by Garifuna fishing villages (Chachahuete and East End), as well as nine private homes on Cayo Grande and six homes on the smaller cays. You can access the islands by boat from La Ceiba or by chartering a sailboat from Utila or Roatán.
